US Congressman. Moving with his parents to Ohio, in 1834, he graduated from Antioch College, in 1857 and was clerk of the court of common pleas of Lorain County. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to law practice in Elyria, Ohio. Moving to East Saginaw, Michigan, in 1872, he practiced law and was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth, Forty-seventh and Forty-eighth Congresses, serving from 1879 to 1885. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he moved to New York City, New York in 1890 and was associate editor of the "New York Tribune" until his death.
