Barbara C. Schell, 90 of Devils Lake, ND died on Thursday, November 10, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.
Mass of Christian Burial for Barbara will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. C. F. Wilhelm will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary and Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass. Serving as Casket Bearers will be Barbara’s Grandsons, Scott Anderson, Kirby Anderson, Dan Jackson, Daniel Rodriguez and David Jackson and Barbara’s Nephews, Dennis Schiele. Honorary Casket Bearers: Barbara’s Granddaughter, Gayla Martin and Nick and Lena Thomas, Carol Anderson, Kathrine Schiele, Albert Seykora and the Caretakers at the Good Samaritan Center. Gift Bearers will be: Barbara’s Granddaughters, Dawn Abrahamson, Carmen Williams, Tammy Hoefert, Lisa Thue and Rhonda Russo.
Barbara Carrol Schiele was born on February 11, 1915 at Crary, North Dakota, the daughter of Dominic and Elizabeth (Miltenberger) Schiele. She was reared and educated in the Crary area, graduating from Noonan Township High School in 1932. Barbara was united in marriage to Valentine “Shorty” Schell on February 24, 1936 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. They established their home in Devils Lake where they lived, worked and raised their family. Barbara worked for many years at the American. She was known as “Mom” to many kids in the area and was the best malted milk maker in the country. She was also famous for her Kuchen. She later worked at Pop’s until she retired at age 65. Valentine died on February 16, 1987. Barbara was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society, Catholic Order of Forrester’s, and the VFW Auxiliary. She was a former member of the Eagles Auxiliary. Barbara is survived by her loving children: Betty Ditter and her husband, David of Devils Lake Jeanette Wood and her husband, Robert, Lilliwaup, Washington Carrol Rodriguez and her husband, Juan of Brownsville, Texas Robert Schell and his wife, Alice of Sitka, Alaska Eleven Grandchildren Thirty Great Grandchildren Five Great Great Grandchildren Sisters: Ann Myzak and her husband, John, Salem, Oregon Mary Sager, Hayward, California Brother: Leo Schiele and his wife, Polly, Minneapolis, Minnesota Many Nieces and Nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Valentine; brothers, Philip, Bert and Jack Schiele; sisters, Christina Dettling, Elizabeth Gregg, Regina Eisele and Rose Gette.
