History - John was the son of John Sr. & Margaret Cunningham Morton. They sailed to the U.S. on the Tuscarora (brother Allen, sister Mary)landing in Philadelphia on July 3, 1857. The first year was spent in Maryland and the next five years in Pennsylvania. In May 1863, the family came to Utah, arriving in Salt Lake City in Sept. of that year. The family settled in Franklin, Cache, Idaho where on the 27th of September, 1863 he was baptized into the LDS Church.

On the advice of an uncle the family went to Midway, Wasatch Co. Utah where they took up land and farming. He also worked in the mining business. The family went thru all the hardships of the period and forted up at Midway during the Black Hawk War with the Indians. On June 10, 1872 he married Fanny Lucretia Wardle. Two children were born, John Edwin and Fanny Lucretia. On March 20, 1883 his wife died from kidney disease. After his wife's death he went on a mission for the LDS church to the Southern States, April 13, 1885-March 6, 1887.

On May 16, 1888 he married Maria Watkins Morton in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. In 1909 he and his family moved to Kaysville, Davis Co, Utah and built the home he lived in until his death. At the time of his death he held the office of Justice of the Peace.

He died from severe asthma and silicosis of the lungs from years of working in the mines.
