Joshua Heap was the son of Samuel & Elizabeth Heap of Wallasey, Cheshire, England. Samuel was a policeman. Joshua joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 14 on 28 November 1885 in Washington, D.C. He died in a hurricane in Samoa 16 March 1889 at age 18. There were lives from several ships lost as a result of the hurricane, including seven from Joshua's ship, the "Nipsic." He and others who lost their lives were buried with full military honors on 27 June 1891. Family members are buried in England, and picture of that grave has been included on this site. Joshua's brother also died at age 18 of a drowning in England.
