Norman Gary Lane, 75, of Bloomington, died Saturday at Bloomington Hospital.
Gary was born on Feb. 19, 1930, in French Lick, Ind., to Charles C. and Thelma Lane. At the age of 2
he moved to Sidell, Ill., with his parents. He received his bachelor's degree from Oberlin College, and
his master's and Ph.D. from Kansas University, graduating in 1958. As a graduate student, he traveled
on a Fulbright Fellowship to Tasmania.
Gary was on the faculty of UCLA from 1959 to 1973, specializing in the paleontology of crinoids, and
spending a year in Ireland in 1971-2 supported by a Fulbright Fellowship. He came to IU as a full
professor in 1973, chaired the Geology department from 1984 to 1987 and retired in 1995. As an
emeritus professor, Gary kept active, teaching many Honors courses and continuing his research.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary; his son Charles Lane and his wife, Joyce, of West Chester,
Penn.; his daughter, Ann McCandless and her husband, Garry, of Jeffersonville, Ind.; his daughter,
Susan Lane and her husband, Anthony Casebeer, of Louisville, Ky.; and grandchildren, Aurora E. and
David G. Lane of West Chester, Penn., and Mary L. McCandless of Jeffersonville Ind.; and his sister,
Judy Waterman and her husband, Norton, of Louisville, Ky.
Services will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church at 1O a.m. Thursday, with burial at Valhalla Memory
Gardens. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Paleontology 2000 Fund (please mark donations as being for the
"Treatise"), KU Endowment, PO Box 928, Lawrence, KS 66044; St. Paul Catholic Center in
Bloomington; or Mother Hubbard's Cupboard in Bloomington.
