Mason G. Petty, 93, of rural Claremont, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at the home of his daughter, Donna Moore, in rural Cuba.

Cremation has been accorded. A memorial service will be held at Fiatt Independent Christian Church in Fiatt at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 with Pastor Jim Menne officiating. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. A Celebration of Life will be held in Olney in the spring with burial in Amity Cemetery. Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Petty was born July 22, 1920, in Liberty Center, Indiana, the son of Rev. Bert M. and Fay (Coquillette) Petty. He was married December 23, 1944, to Beulah Fern Baylor in Homer. She preceded him in death in 2005.

He attended McKendree College and University of Illinois.During World War II, he worked at Curtiss-Wright in St. Louis building airplanes until he moved to the farm north of Claremont, Illinois, in 1944.

Mason farmed in Richland County, worked for AMF and later for the Illinois Department of Transportation.He was active in the Richland County Republican Party for many years.He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Olney.After retirement, Mason and Beulah traveled to 46 of the Lower 48 states. He enjoyed sports and played basketball in high school and college.He also loved camping and photography.

Mr. Petty is survived by his five children, Donna (J.C.) Moore, of Cuba, Deborah Petty, of Springfield, Rebecca Scott, of Fairfield, Jim (Beth) Petty and Gary Petty, of Olney; six grandchildren, Heather (Don) Borst, Jayme (Sarah Lindquist) Moore, Heidi (Eric) Howard, Doug (Melinda) Moore, Ross (Emily Cartmill) Petty, and Brent Petty; six great-grandchildren; sister, Ellen Hendrix, of Bloomington; several nieces; and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, Cecil, and infant brother, James.
