A memorial Mass for Denise Machala Wood, 44, of 109 Lake Hickory Ct., Cary, who died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006 at her residence, was conducted at noon Friday, Jan. 27, in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Ms. Wood was native of Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of John E. Machala of Burlington, who survives, and the late Nieves G. Machala. Her late brother was John J. Machala.

She was a graduate of Elon University and received a master's degree from East Carolina University. She later attended Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pa. in pursuit of her doctorate degree.

She was director of grants and special projects at Piedmont Community College in Roxboro. Previously, she had worked at N. C. State University as director of the Office of Undergraduate Fellowship Advising. She also managed the university's campus selection competitions and the application processes for most major national awards, including the Fulbright, Rhodes, Gates, Cambridge and National Science Foundation Scholarships and Awards.

She was a Roman Catholic.

Surviving in addition to her father is a sister, Michele M. Foster and husband, J. Mike, of Burlington; a niece, Olivia; and a nephew, James.
