Wendell Phillip Lockard, 81, of 1921 Westchester Road, Waterloo, IA and 1925 Sunset Knoll West, Tucson, Ariz., died the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at his home in Tucson.


He was born Dec. 9, 1924, in Geneseo Township, son of Fred A. and Vera Gardner Lockard.


On March 14, 1947, he married Arlyne Hilton at First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls.


He graduated from Geneseo High School and joined the Navy in 1943. He served in the South Pacific as a radio man third class; in the Signal Corps; and was stationed on a PT boat during World War II.


Wendell started a construction business in Waterloo in 1948, building masonry fireplaces and basements. He expanded Wendell Lockard Construction through the years, opening other locations. He also formed a real estate and commercial development company, which his son, Ken, runs today.


Wendell was very active in the Cedar Valley in business and as a volunteer. He helped initiate several new businesses by funding start-ups. He started Skate Country, Inc., in Waterloo, and with his partners, expanded it throughout the United States. In the mid-1960's he brought Pasqualli's Restaurant, the first pizza parlor in the Cedar Valley, to Waterloo.


He was president of the University of Northern Iowa Athletic Club and instrumental in fundraising for the UNI-Dome in the early 1970's. He was a member of the University of Northern Iowa Foundation Board and a strong supporter of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony. He was chairman of Master Builders of Iowa, and was a member of Cedar Valley Community Church in Waterloo and Casas Adobes Baptist Church in Tucson.


Wendell traveled extensively throughout his life. He was very involved with Campus Crusade for Christ International and often traveled to Asia.


He is survived by his wife, Arlyne; son, Ken and his wife Amy Lockard of the Cedar Valley; daughter, Janet and her husband David Jorgenson of Tucson; 10 grandchildren, Jonathan, Thomas, Daniel, Elizabeth, Victoria, Kathryn and Michael Lockard, and Nicholas, Mitchell and Madison Jorgenson; sisters, Mauree Nordman of Waterloo and Thelma Starr of Lethbridge, Canada.


Wendell was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herb, Earl, Roger, Bill and Homer; sister, Lois Smith; and grandson, Zachary.


Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Cedar Valley Community Church, 3520 Ansborough Ave., Waterloo. Visitation will be one hour before the service.


Memorials in his name may be made to Campus Crusade for Christ International.
