He was born and raised in Atlantic City and graduated from Atlantic City Boys Vocational School in 1950.
From an early age Don showed an adventurous spirit and love of the sea, serving on the crew of several commercial fishing boats operating from the Atlantic City inlet, including the North Star.
He joined the Navy in 1953 serving as an aircraft electronics specialist during the Korean War. Upon return from his tour of duty Don went to work for Moffitt Electric and became a member of Local 211 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union where he served as Treasurer for 25 years. He retired in 1991 working for Calvi Electric where he was commonly referred to as "Captain Tapp" and served as general foreman during the construction of both Resorts International and The Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort.
Don moved to Ventnor Heights with his family in 1970 and was an active member of Saint James Parish. He was an avid fisherman and after retiring, the Captain could often be found on his 15 foot Mako boat, drifting over his secret weakfish hole, and in later years on the Ventnor fishing pier telling a tale, or two.
He passed away at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania after a short hospital stay.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Darlene (nee Smith) of 50 years; and siblings, Timothy and Robert.
Don will be greatly missed by his three sons and their wives; and his nine grandchildren and his surviving siblings.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Star of the Sea Church, Atlantic City. Burial following at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing.
