Ben was a kind, generous and loving man who truly loved people. It was often stated that he never met a stranger. He was gregarious and made friends wherever he went. Ben was also affectionately known for his sense of humor. He will always be remembered for his zeal in serving Jehovah for over 50 years and for aiding scores of persons to dedication and baptism. Ben's hospitality, laughter and smile will be missed by his local family of Jehovah's Witnesses at the West Lynchburg, VA Congregation. Ben was born on the south side of Chicago - June 10, 1941 to Annie and Arthur Powell.

He is survived by his three siblings Hugo, Emma, Phillip and their 6 children who all adored their brother and "Uncle Benny." After graduating from school he married his high school sweetheart Doris Peery, their loving marriage endured for 40 years. The two produced 4 children Benjamin Jr. (deceased), Borris, Bruce and Dorben Joy. Ben was a hardworking, excellent provider for his children and will be dearly missed by them and his 3 grandchildren who affectionately called him Papa. Ben was well known in the community as an honest, philanthropic minister, friend and family man. After leaving the military he received several awards during his 38 year career at R.R. Donnelly & Sons.

After Doris' death Ben found comfort in his marriage of 16 years to Lavern Barbery. Lavern fondly recalls how Ben enthusiastically supported her pioneer ministry for 15 years. He also Grew very close to her children Anita, Lloyd and Joni and her grandchildren who loved him as their own father and grandfather. Ben's hope was to live forever on the paradise earth. All those who love him and miss him are sustained by their hope in the resurrection.
