Willard W. "Bud" Carter Jr. passed away peacefully Nov. 3, 2013, at his home in Wasilla.

Bud was born on January 12, 1942 in Los Angeles, Calif. He joined the Navy in 1961 and served on the flight deck of USS Ticonderoga during the Vietnam Conflict. Bud married Kathie Hansel April 1, 1961. Their son, Willard Warren "Rick" Carter, III was born March 5, 1962. He and Kathie were divorced in 1963. During the same year Bud met Doris Ann Puckett in Huntington Beach, Calif., where she was working as a nurse; they were married the following year. Bud loved the Navy and his country and was honorably discharged in 1966. In 1973 Bud and Ann packed up their son Christopher, daughter Crystal, and dog, Shadow, and headed north to Alaska to start their new lives in the Last Frontier. The family settled in Eagle River.

In 1973 Bud was hired onto the Anchorage Police Department, retiring in 1994 as a Senior Patrol Officer. Bud loved coaching baseball and spent many years working with young athletes. In 1989 under his leadership the Chugiak Mustangs won the American Legion State Championship.

Bud and Ann divorced in 1997. After his retirement from the Anchorage Police Department he moved to Henderson, Nevada for a number of years working for the Clark County Sheriff's Department as a warrant officer. He married Francine Larsen Sept. 9, 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada, however she could not move to Las Vegas with her minor children. In 2005, Bud moved back to Alaska with Kathleen L. Johnson, and the couple made their home, first in Eagle River, then in Wasilla. Bud enjoyed working on his home in Wasilla. He was an avid gardener and loved working in his greenhouse. He was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and had an impressive gun collection. Bud was also a member of the Citizens' Patriots Group in Wasilla. Following his divorce from Francine in 2008, he married Kathie Johnson in the same year.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Willard Warren "Curly" Carter, Sr. and Mary Musacco Carter; brother, Michael Louis (Joyce) Carter; and son, Willard Warren "Rick" (Michele Poore) Carter, III of Texas.
