Lanie Thompson Baker's parents Robert Thompson and Martha ( Lane ) Thompson were living in DeKakb,Bowie Texas when Robert joined the Union Army during the Civil War. Martha and her children left Texas and returned to Hardin County, Illinois, along with other women and children. They traveled from Texas in a covered wagon pulled by a yoke of oxen. During the trip the oxen hooves became sore so Martha traded the oxen to a farmer for another pair. When they traveled into Confederate Territory they would make camp with the tongue of wagon pointed south and this would help keep them safe. Many times their camp was visited by soldiers both Confederate and Union. One time Confederate soldiers rode into camp and saw a mare and colt. The soldiers stole the mare and shot the colt. The journey was long and hard, the repairs on the wagons were made by the women and children who also cared for the livestock.
