Thomas Burgess Dies at Age 74; Rites Wednesday
Thomas Mason Burgess died at 7:15 o'clock Sunday night at his home, 917 Conger Avenue. He was 74 years, four months and 26 days of age. A farmer most of his lifetime, Mr. Burgess had been employed at the Mt. Vernon Furnace & Mfg. Co. for four years.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p. m. at Mt. Pleasant Church in Wayne county. The Rev. Delbert Goff of Xenia will officiate and burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. The body will remain at Myers Chapel, where friends may call after 10 a. m. Tuesday.
Mr. Burgess was born November 16, 1878 in Wayne county, the son of Mason and Matilda (Brown) Burgess. He was married to Mary Lizzie Coil, who survives. Mr. Burgess was a member of the General Baptist Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Harlin of Salem and Arvel of Mt. Vernon; four daughters, Mrs. Leta Towns and Mrs. Opal Austin of Mt. Vernon, Mrs. Lora Clark of Salem and Mrs. Myrtle Henson of Xenia; three brothers, Jesse of Xenia, Phil of Tampico, Ill. and Joe of Sterling, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Lora Henson of Rock Falls, Ill.; 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Raymond and Oakley.
