The death date on the headstone is likely not accurate. His military record is quite specific that he died at the Battle of Seven Pines on 31 May 1862; there are several records to document that his father received his back pay through the date of his death on 31 May. One record is of his father stating that he died on 6 June, but had that been the case, he would have been paid to that date.
