U.S. Congressman. Born near Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, after receiving a general education, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Juniata County Pennsylvania, in 1819. In 1831, he was elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-second, Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses and served until his resignation in 1836. He then was appointed judge of the Berks judicial district, serving (1836-47), when he was appointed Pennsylvania State Treasurer, serving (1847-48). He continued to practice law until his death at age 70 in Reading, Pennsylvania.
