ST. MARYS, Ga. | Delmer Gene Maughan, age 57, of St. Marys, Ga., formerly of Reform, Ala., died February 2, 2014, at home. Memorial Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Kennie Hill Church of God with Rev. Jerry Trotter officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow at 3 p.m. in Center Springs Cemetery in Gordo with Skelton Funeral Home of Reform directing. There will be a short visitation before service and visitation will continue after the service at the church.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Betty Sue Stephens Maughan of St. Marys, Ga.; sons, William Michael "Mike" Maughan (Lisa) of Carrollton, Ala. and Anthony Cole Maughan (Ashley) of Ft. Hood, Texas; parents, Murray and Louise Sentell Maughan of Reform, Ala.; sister, Cindy Rogers (Eddie) of Wiggins, Miss.; nine grandchildren, "Papaw's little angels" : Shaun, Alex, Colby, Makayla, Roman Cole, Austin, Abigail, Addison and Alexis (BooBoo).
Delmer was born February 11, 1956 and graduated from Pickens County High School in 1974. After working at Reliance Steel for 11 years, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1983. He graduated from Great Lakes, Illinois boot camp with the highest score ever made in Opticalman training. This unprecedented achievement awarded him the honor of selecting his choice destination of service to the Navy in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for four years. He transferred to the Naval Reserve in 1987 so he could attend UAB in Birmingham where he received his bachelor's degree. He worked as Lab Technician at Pickens County Medical Center for 10 years and in 1998 he accepted the job of Opticalman First Class for the U.S. Navy at the Trident Refit Facility in Kings Bay, Georgia where he worked until his death. He received numerous commendations, citations and awards for his dedication, hard work and professionalism for his work on submarine periscopes.
Delmer's greatest joy in life was the time spent with his grandchildren. He enjoyed building guitars and was a devoted husband to his wife. He had a "friend like a brother," Jeff Rogers and was blessed to have Dr. Carlos Levy as his and Betty Sue's caring physician for 16 years.
