Murray was born Dec. 6, 1917, in Akron, Ohio, to Lewis and Mary Hornback Murray. He married Imogene Maddox on Nov. 1, 1939, in Weiser, Idaho.
He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps as a young man. He lived in Akron until 1944, then moved to Weiser. He moved from Weiser to John Day in 1952 and to La Grande in 1963. He had lived in Cottage Grove since 1966.
Murray received a bachelor of science degree in education from Oregon State University. He worked as an auto mechanic for 24 years and taught auto mechanics at Cottage Grove High School from 1966 to 1976. He sometimes worked in commercial fishing in the summer. He was also a woodworker and clockmaker. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, restoring old cars and playing the banjo. He belonged to the Church of Christ and was past noble grand of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Lewis "Butch" of Yoncalla and John "Pete" of Asotin, Wash.; two daughters, Alice Swenson of Cottage Grove and Pamela Saunders of Pleasanton, Kan.; a sister, Prisella Hildabrand of Canton, Ohio; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.
Thursday's service will be at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Shields Cemetery in Cottage Grove.
Memorial contributions may be made to industrial or sports programs at Cottage Grove High School.
