Claire was born on July 7, 1940 in Winston-Salem, NC, to Cecil Mahlon and Elna Connelly Rose, who preceded her in death.
She was a 1958 graduate of James A. Gray High School and a 1962 graduate of High Point College. She began her career as an administrative assistant for NASA in Houston, Texas at the time of the Mercury 7 astronauts, where she met the love of her life and her husband of 46 years, Glenn R. Buckley of Sheridan, Texas. Following their marriage, they lived in New Orleans, Atlanta, Richmond, and Charlotte before settling in her hometown, where they lived at the time of her death.
Following their return to Winston-Salem, Claire joined State Farm Insurance and celebrated her 30th anniversary as an agent on July 1 of this year. She was also a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and was known as an outgoing, kind, beach-loving person who loved spending time with her family and friends and driving her convertible. She will be remembered for her feisty spirit, compassionate heart, and wonderful sense of style and grace.
Claire was an avid tennis player and a member of three USTA tennis teams as recently as this spring. She was a USTA team captain for many years, a founding member and player at Visions Tennis Center, and helped lead her team to a state championship in 2010.
Claire is survived by her husband Glenn; son Brenan, his wife Jamie, and their sons Ian and George; son Patrick, his wife Beth, and their new daughter Ruth Claire; sister Sandra Lasley; nieces Robin Rose and Jennifer Lasley; nephew John Lasley III; and several great-nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Centenary United Methodist Church, Winston-Salem, NC. The family will receive friends after the service in the reception hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Avenue, Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605; or to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 West Fifth Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27102.
