Mary was the daughter of David and Margaret nee Norris Hazelton. She married Captain William Ensley Ellis on September 3, 1860 at the Trinity Anglican Church in Digby, Nova Scotia. In 1876 William became the keeper of the light house at Point Prim. Mary and William resided at Point Prim for the next 37 years where they raised fifteen children.
