John Stoffel, Economite Employee, Dies

A wide circle of friends learned with deep regret yesterday of the death of John Stoffel at his home at 79 Fourteenth street, at 6:45 yesterday morning. He would have been 78 years old had he lived until the 4th of next September.

Mr. Stoffel had been confined to his bed only since Sunday last when he suffered a stroke. Pneumonia developed and was the immediate cause of his demise. About 15 years ago he suffered a stroke but seemingly fully recovered; a second occurred 5 years ago and he has since been in poor health but able to be about. The one on Sunday last was the fourth.

Mr. Stoffel was born in Lanesville [Lewisville], Monroe county, Ohio but came to Allegheny in young manhood. Later his parents moved to Glenfield.

Mr. Stoffel was in the employ of the Harmony Society for 35 years in the capacity of a foreman. He supervised the cutting of the timber from much of their holdings here. His connection with the society only ceased with the dissolution of the society in 1903. From that time until five years ago when he retired he was employed by the borough and had charge of its street force, a part of the time as street commissioner.

Mr. Stoffel was married October 1, 1871 to Miss Mary Wedel, who survives him. To them were born nine children all living, the youngest age 31, his death being the first break in the family circle.

The children are Mrs. Chas. Miller of Sarasota, Fla; Mrs. Mollie Riley and Mrs. A. C. McGillivray of Ambridge; Mrs. Chas. McCarthy of Youngstown, O., Mrs. F. E. DeLong

of Annondale, Butler county; Mrs. Harry Haggerty of Emlenton, Pa.; J. H. Stoffel of Texas; Elmer of Sewickley and Alvin of Ambridge. He is also survived by one brother, Jacob Stoffel, former chief of police of Ambridge, 22 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mr. Stoffel was a member of St. John's German Lutheran Church of Ambridge.

The house in which he died was one built by the society he served for so long and in the old days was known as the tailor shop.

Funeral services will be held from the late home at 2 p. m. tomorrow, Rev. A. P. Bittinger officiating. Interment will be in the Economy cemetery.
