Jacob P. Helms was born ca 1788 in Fincastle Virginia, died 1857 Dallas County Texas m. Nancy Peery d/o Thomas Peery and Margaret Dennis. Jacob Helms was the son of Rev. John Helms and his wife Elizabeth Andrews /or some say Jackson.
The best description of his life is contained in a paper written by his son-in-law Hugh S. Bailey "From New Garden I went to Prestoburg KY in the employ of Jacob Helms as a tanner. This Jacob Helm was born at Fincastle VA and moved thence to Tazewell county courthouse where he carried on saddling and tanning. His trade was saddlemaking. He married Nancy Peery, sister of Thomas, William and Harvey G. Peery who were brought up in Tazewell county. He afterward lived and owned a house and lot in Salem VA. He was a fine workman and my earliest knowledge of him was that he was a man of integrity, and other who knew him before he left Salem and moved to Russell speak well of him, but in later years he tampered with liquor, and it might be said, brought himself to ruin. I had worked for him some in the tanning trade in Russell county VA and had worked there with Jacob Snider at Russell county courthouse. Snider was from Salem VA and was an expert at his trade. At Prestonburg I worked for a year for Mr. Helms for which I got no pay. After something more than a year I was married to his daughter, Margaret, second in age of his family. He lived at Prestonburg from 1831 or 1832 and I left him there when I came away in 1839. He afterward moved to Texas where he died. I worked for him some four years in Russell, and knew him for or six more years there"

Do you have any information on her Uncle, Sebert Helm/Webb? He was my great-great-grandfather and one of my oldest brick walls. I recently found information suggesting he was the son of Jacob Helm, but then I found out there are at least three men by that name, one of whom was George Washington Helm's father. Another was listed as a Colonel Jacob Helm. Some people have Sebert's mother as Nancy Webb, daughter of Constance "Connie" Webb. But others have Contance married to Adam Helm, not Jacob. It is a tangled knot.
I only have a tentative birth date of 1807. He is in the 1850 Census as "Sebert Webb" and the 1860 Census as "Seabird Webb". But his marriage bond record, to Anna Radford, for March 3, 1823, uses the name "Sebert Helm".
