Police officer. She was a 7-year veteran of the Newington Police Department before her untimely death as the victim of a murder-suicide at her home on Nov. 21, 2005. A native of Durham and a resident of West Hartford at the time of her death, Ciara graduated from Mercy High School in Middletown and Fairfield University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Women's Studies. After graduating from the Police Officer Standards and Training Academy, Ciara joined the Newington Police Department. She was subsequently assigned as the resource officer at Newington High School. In her honor, the Ciara M. McDermott Scholarship Fund was established and a tree was planted in her memory at Newington High School.
