Helen Virginia Pate passed away peacefully on January 25, 2014, with family and friends by her side.
Helen was born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 26, 1922, the only child of James and Josephine Byrd. Raised in Missouri, she moved to Coronado with her husband William Pate, arriving here in 1940, on her 18th birthday. Helen lived and worked most of her life in Coronado. She owned the D&D Cafe (now the Night & Day Cafe) and the Orange Ave Hotel. Later she worked at the Coronado Cleaners.
She is survived by daughter Victoria Fencl and her husband Lou; son Judge William Pate and his wife, Judge Christine Pate; her grandchildren: William Pate (Greta), Bryan Pate (Dr. Caroline Paterno), David Pate and Douglas Pate (Nikki), and great-grandchildren Thomas, Susanna, Taylor and Livy. She will also be missed by her nieces and nephews, as well as her many Coronado friends.
Services were held at Glen Abbey's Little Chapel of the Roses in Bonita. Donations can be made in Helen's name to the American Lung Association or The Rady Children's Hospital.
