In February 2014, Butch's older brother James Bland Jr (Jim) told me the story of how Butch died. He was originally supposed to go along with his mother on a shopping trip. At the last minute plans changed and he accompanied his father to work in the railroad yard in the Everett township on Hwy 341.

While James Sr. worked inside the office Butch and some other boys played unsupervised in the railroad yard. There was a large piece of metal that had been unloaded from a flatcar and leaned precariously against a telegraph pole. Jim says the item resembled a large metal gear with spokes coming off a hub, and it weighed many hundreds of pounds.

Butch climbed up on the gear and it toppled over on him - crushing his chest. The commotion in the yard brought Butch's father running, and though slight of stature he lifted the heavy cog off of little Butch and put him in the car and rushed him to the hospital in Jesup. Butch died enroute.
