Rebecca Jane Hunt was born March 6, 1873, one of eleven children born to Josephus and Mary Elizabeth (Babcock) Hunt. She was usually called "Bec". When she was a young girl, her parents moved to Washington Township, Paulding County. While living there, she met Sherman Switzer and they started to keep company.
Phillip Sheridan Switzer was born on May 14, 1868 in Paulding County, OH. Known as Sherid, he was the child of Jacob and Elsie (Kirkendall) Switzer. Another of their sons was named Grant after another Civil War General. Sherid grew up in the Melrose, Ohio area.
Sherid and Rebecca were married on April 6, 1890. At the time of their marriage and for a few years following, Sherid managed a hotel in Melrose, Ohio. In about 1899, they moved to Defiance County, Ohio, where Sherid farmed in Defiance and Highland Townships.
Eventually they moved to 915 Sunday Avenue, Defiance, Ohio and Sherid took a job with the Defiance Schools as janitor and caretaker. He worked there for eighteen years until he retired.
