Son of Dr. William Alston and Mary Elizabeth Burton. Bugler, 13th Regiment, Texas Volunteers (Company I, Texas 13th Infantry Regiment). Location of his grave is unknown. According to an article published in the Fort Worth Daily Gazette 18 Jan 1883, he died in Wilbarger County, Texas:

"William Alston died here recently and was buried by the charity of his friends, notwithstanding he was born with 'a silver spoon' in his mouth and twelve months ago worth $75000. Whiskey and women did it."

His death in Texas is further corroborated by an obituary run in the Roanoke News of Weldon, NC at the same time. For many years, details of his death were suppressed in the family; his nieces and nephews were told that he had died at Vicksburg and was buried in a mass grave.

William was born in North Carolina, the grandson of former North Carolina Governor Hutchins Gordon Burton and great-grandson of revolutionary patriot, Willie Jones.
