History of Cass County Michigan:

Barker F Rudd, a native of Vermont, came to Cass County in 1834. He and his brother Stephen started from Vermont with teams, and as they passed the State of New York stopped at John Grinell's, a brother in law, and prevailed on him to accompany them. They all came to Calvin Township where a sister of the Rudds, Mrs Jessie Hutchings resided. Barker and Stephen worked at their trade, that of carpenters and joiners, for some time in the employ of an uncle, Henry Jones, for whom they built a dwelling house. While living on Young's Prairie, Mr Rudd purchased the first cook stove in neighborhood which was looked upon as a very doubtful innovation.
