Cornelius Maddocks, son of John Maddocks of Eastbourne Parish, Sussex Shire, England, "transported from England to the New World in 1680." His ship sailed up the Chesapeake Bay, veered left into the Potomac waterway and docked at Port Tobacco in the colony of Maryland. Cornelius was an ambitious young man becoming a merchant in Port Tobacco, acquired land and was active in community activities. Within a few short years he courted and married Mary Smallwood, daughter of Col. James Smallwood and Hester Evans Smallwood. Mary was not yet sixteen when they married. Records show James Smallwood made gift of "one cow and one mare" to his daughter, "Mary Maddocks." The following was noted in Minutes of Maryland Assembly: "Cornelius Maddocks, merchant was allotted 1800 pounds of tobacco in payment by the Maryland Assembly for public expenses." Cornelius and Mary had six surviving children, the sixth born after his death. His estate was inventoried "prior to March 9, 1705".
Cornelius was laid to rest among other early British colonists in Port Tobacco. His widow, Mary, married a colonist, John Taylor, and had three more children. The fatherless children of Cornelius were raised by this stepfather with their half siblings.
Note: Another source in a Family Tree lists the parents of Cornelius Maddocks as Edward Maddocks and Margery Stone Maddocks.
