Born a son to parents Benedict and Ida (Plispis) Serva of Fort Plain, Montgomery County, New York.

According to official records of the U.S. Veterans Bureau (aka today the Veterans Administration), Private Alexander Serva (aka Gaden) was enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, probably underage and without the required written permission for persons less than age 18 granted by his parents Benedict and Ida Serva. The Amsterdam Evening Recorder article cited below further reports that Alexander may have also been known to use the name Jackson. First cousin Alexander's short military service was likely Honorable, but in current military terms, his enlistment would be regarded as fraudulent and cause for Alexander's General Discharge. Alexander's extended family does not currently understand the family circumstances that caused this fraudulent action by young Alexander, except to propose that strong patriotism and a desire to serve his county in those difficult times during the military build-up before and during "The Great War."
