Helene Eva (Ross) Abare
June 25, 1917 - June 24, 2019

Helene E. Abare, passed away Monday, June 24, 2019 at the Marjorie McCune Memorial Center in Black Mountain, just 12 hours shy of her 102nd birthday.

Helene was born June 25, 1917 in Athol, MA to the late Fred and Cora Ross. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Kenneth L. Abare and three sisters in Athol, MA.

The Abare family moved to Florida in 1956; settling in New Port Richey. They purchased the New Port Richey Cleaners. When the cleaning business sold three years later, A&K HOMES INC. became the new venture started by Ken and his friend Al. The business flourished. They developed 3 sub-divisions and many homes in New Port Richey.

On their 32nd wedding anniversary, Ken underwent open-heart surgery but did not survive the ordeal. Art and Real Estate Courses at the Community College filled the void of Helene's loss. Seven years later she moved her residency to Palm Bay and enjoyed the love and friendship showered on her by her children, grandchildren and eventually her great-grandchildren. While in Palm Bay, she became a member of the original Palm Bay Senior Center, later as President of the Association for 2 terms.

In 2005, Helene made the move to Glenbrooke at Palm Bay, a Senior Lifestyle Community. In 2007 the residents elected her President of the Residents Council. She served one year. The move to Glenbrooke was a new experience in senior living. Another move was experienced. She moved into Bershire in W. Melbourne. She later moved into Hibiscus Court in Melbourne. In 2015, due to her declining health, Helene moved to Black Mountain, NC to be closer to her daughter.

Throughout Helene's life some of her achievements included: art work; wood carving; knitting; quilt designing; basket weaving; painting; sewing; and all creative hand crafts. She also volunteered for ROTC program at the Red Cross Center each Thursday afternoon, sewing lap robes for patients in nursing centers.

Left behind to cherish Helene's memory are three sons, Brian K. Abare of Brighton, TN, Wayne E. Abare of Malabar, FL, and Bruce R. Abare of New Port Richey, FL; one daughter, Norma J. Abare of Black Mountain, NC; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Helene's life will be held at Marjorie McCune Memorial Center in Black Mountain, NC at a later date.
