GREENLAND - Bruce R. Graves, 75, of Annes Lane, died April 8, 2006, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Portsmouth, on June 18, 1930, the son of Andrew and Julia Mae (Peters) Graves.

Bruce was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1948. He served in the Navy.

In 1967, Bruce was appointed to the Portsmouth Board of Adjustment; in 1968, he was appointed by the city manager to serve as a liaison member of the Planning Board to serve on both boards. Bruce was elected to the City Council in 1971, and in 1973, he was re-elected as Portsmouth mayor, serving the city for two terms. He was a member of North Congregational Church and past exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 97 in Portsmouth.

Besides his wife of 57 years, Joanne R. (St. Hilaire) Graves, survivors include three sons, Ken Graves of Jupiter, Fla., Dennis Graves and his wife, Linda, of Greenland, and Jeffrey Graves of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Zachary Graves of Texas, Ryan Graves, Justin Graves, Dayna Grave, and Jacob Graves all of Greenland; a brother, Neil Graves of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, June Sawyer of Exeter; many nieces and nephews.

WE REMEMBER: Bruce along with his wife and sons owned and operated BG?s Boathouse Restaurant in Portsmouth. He was also a contractor in the Seacoast area for more than 20 years.
