Biographical Information

Abraham M. HALSTEAD, one of Greene County's oldest citizens, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. L. POPE, in Linton last Monday morning at 1:00 o'clock, following an illness of two years.
Mr. HALSTEAD'S condition had gradually grown worse during the past year, having suffered intensely from cancer of the stomach.
Mr. HALSTEAD and his wife lived north of Bloomfield until a few months ago. They moved here from Lonetree.
The deceased was born October 7, 1852, in Piqua County, Ohio. For many years the family lived southwest of Lyons, near the Waggoner schoolhouse. In 1880 he was married to Sarah E. PIRTLE, and to this union four children were born, one having died some time ago. Besides the widow, there daughters, Mrs. POPE, Mrs. J. C. CRAVENS and Mrs. C. W. HEATON, survive. Two sisters, Mrs. Catherine MCINDOO, of Jasonville, and Martha E. HALSTEAD, of Sandborn, also survive.
The deceased was one of the most active men in the county in past years, and will be remembered as having engaged in the mercantile business in Lyons, Linton and Vicksburg. He served as postmaster at Vicksburg for four years.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows at Vicksburg and the Rebekah at Bloomfield. He was one of the oldest Odd Fellows in this community, having been a member of the order for twenty-four years.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the residence of Mrs. POPE, the Rev. E. C. CORTS, pastor of the Christian church, officiating. Interment was in the Waggoner Cemetery, north of Lyons.

Mr. and Mrs. Taylor PIRTLE, of this place, and the following member of Mary Rebekah lodge attended the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. Emmet ASHBAUGH, Mr. and Mrs. Ray ASHBAUGH, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan LYNN, Mrs. Dolph LEWIS, Mrs. Charles COX and Mrs. G. M. SPARKS.
