George W. Chambers of Hancock, County, Illinois, enlisted in August of 1862 as a Private in Co. H, 118th Illinois Infantry. He mustered out in September of 1864.

He was listed with his wife, Mary C., born in Ohio, William, 5, and Oscar, 2, both born in Illinois. Edward Lawson, 19; Charles Lawson, 16; and Henry Lawson, 10; were also listed as stepsons of George Chambers.

Edward Lawson, 8, and Charles Lawson, 6, were listed on the 1870 Clear Lake, Sangamon, Illinois census with Barnes Lawson, 60, and Mary Lawson, 47. Barnes Lawson and Mary Bannon had married in February of 1857 in Sangamon County, Illinois. (marriage index) Family information lists the death of Barnes Lawson in 1873 in Sangamon County, Illinois.

Mary E. Lawson, widow of George W. Chambers of the 118th Illinois Infantry, received a Civil War Widow's pension in June of 1886. George had received an invalid's pension in 1880.
