Dr. Robert Lee Vann, 91,of Bristol, Tennessee died February 1, 2014 at his home surrounded by family and caregivers.

He was born March 17, 1922 in Wake Forest, NC to Dr. Herbert M. and Mildred Arzani Vann.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Vann was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Hille Vann, and sister Jane Vann Waller.

Dr. Vann graduated with honors from Wake Forest College and received his M.D. degree from The Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest College, where he was selected for membership in the AOA, a national medical student honor fraternity. He served his internship at Barnes Hospital/Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri, where he met the love of his life, Pat Hille.

He served five years in the U. S. Army during and after World War II. Dr. Vann practiced family medicine in Statesville, NC and subsequently returned to Winston-Salem where he completed his residency training in pediatrics at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital.

Dr. Vann was then appointed to the faculty of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine where he remained until 1963 when he joined three other pediatricians to form Pediatric Associates, the first pediatric group practice in Winston-Salem. In 1968, Dr. Vann joined the Squibb Institute for Medical Research in Princeton, New Jersey. He was then recruited in 1973 to join the clinical research staff of Beecham Laboratories in Bristol where he rose to the position of medical director. In 1983, Dr. Vann accepted a position with Glaxo Pharmaceuticals Inc. in Research Triangle Park, NC, where he retired in 1987 as vice president of clinical research. He and Mrs. Vann returned to Bristol - their "favorite place to live" - where Dr. Vann remained a Glaxo consultant until 1989. In the fall of 1989 he conceived the idea of forming a contract research company comprised initially of former Beecham employees. In January 1990 he was joined in that endeavor by cofounders Ben Essary and John Vann to form Clinical Trial Management Services (CTMS), Inc. He retired in 2007 following the merger of CTMS with London-based Chiltern International.

Dr. Vann was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a former member of the board of trustees of King College, an avid ham radio operator, achieving the Amateur Extra license. He was a board certified pediatrician and was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association and a charter member of the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians. In 1996 he was selected to be a member of The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom.

Survivors include three sons, William C. Vann and wife Sheila of Garden City, SC, Thomas H. Vann and wife Kitty of Houston TX, and John M. Vann and wife Karen of Bristol, TN. Bob is also survived by his grandchildren, Ashley Gibson, Stephanie Trump, Stuart Vann, Trent Vann, Bennett Vann, Amber Kidner, Garrett Foster, Wesley Foster, and Curtis Vann, 13 great grandchildren, and special niece and nephew Joan Lide and Jim Waller.

A memorial service celebrating Bob Vann's life will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church, 701 Florida Avenue, Bristol, Tennessee, with a reception to follow.

Interment will be private at The Heritage Chapel of Memories at Glenwood Cemetery at a later date.

The family would like to give a special thank you to friends Doug Bassett, Frances Rowell, and Dr. Jack Butterworth, and loyal, long-time caregivers Dorothy Wilson and Jane Larimer, along with countless others, especially within the CTMS family, who touched Bob's life deeply by offering love, laughs, and support over the years.
