Private, Company H, 7th US Cavalry. He was shot in Sturgis during a drunken brawl by Private Thomas J. Whalen of Company H, 7th US Cavalry. The post mortem indicated the bullet entered the sternum near the articulation with the second rib and the aorta artery.

He enlisted on October 15, 1872 in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, by Lieutenant Algernon Smith, giving his previous occupation as farmer. He was assigned to Company A, 7th Cavalry, and participated in the 1876 Sioux Campaign, and the Battle of the Little Big Horn. He served as the orderly for Lieutenant Charles Varnum. At the Little Big Horn battle, he was assigned to Reno's Battalion, and was wounded during the hilltop fight, but survived the battle. Following the battle he was transferred to Company H. In 1877, he reenlisted and was appointed Sergeant in Company D. He was wounded again, on September 30, 1877, in the Snake Creek battle against Chief Joseph's band of Nez Perce. At some date between 1877 and 1881, he was reduced back to Private and transferred back to Company H. He had brown eyes, brown hair, a fair complexion, and was 5 feet 9 3/4 inches tall.
