Born Dec. 27, 1914, in St. Joseph Mo., Mr. Baumgartner was a son of Charles Otto and Nellie Rae Tucker Baumgartner. He married Marietta K. Keltz June 1, 1942, in Pensacola, Fla. She survives.
Mr. Baumgartner was a 1932 graduate of Mendon Township High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Western Illinois University in Macomb in 1950 and a Master of Science degree in education in 1954 from WIU. He also attended the University of Illinois, University of Wyoming, Northeast Missouri State University and Florida Institute of Technology.
Mr. Baumgartner started his teaching career in a one-room school house in Adams County, where he taught for three years. He then taught for three years in Timewell Elementary School in Brown County until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1941. He was commissioned as an officer and pilot in January 1942, served two years in the Pacific war zone, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was discharged with the rank of lieutenant commander in December 1945.
Mr. Baumgartner returned to teaching in Brown County until he moved to Quincy in 1959. In Quincy, he was principal at Jefferson School, retiring in 1975 after 16 years with Quincy Public Schools.
He was a member of the First Christian Church where he served as elder, church school teacher, and sang in the choir. He was a member Bodley Lodge 1 AF&AM where was a past master and chaplain; Quincy Consistory; Ansar Temple of Springfield; Quincy Shrine Club; Quincy High Twelve Club where he was past president; the American Association of Retired Persons; an assistant state coordinator and instruction specialist of the 55 Alive Program; Retired Senior Volunteer Program; Literacy Volunteers of America; a longtime member of the Learning Council and Adams County Retired Teachers Association, serving as president in 1979 and 1982; and a life member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association serving in various positions on the state level.
Also surviving are two sons, David L. Baumgartner of Chesterfield, Mo., and Roger A. Baumgartner of Sugar Land, Texas; a daughter Mrs. James (Jeanette) Vance of Quincy; seven grandchildren, Mrs. Scott (Beth) Underwood and Christ Baumgartner, both of Chesterfield, Mrs. Chad (Kim) Storz of Arnold, Mo., Sara and Brooke Vance, both of Quincy, and Ryan and Alex Baumgartner of Sugar Land; and two sisters, Mrs. Al (Ann) Keim of Quincy and Mrs. Bill (Doris) Harney of Peoria.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in the First Christian Church by the Rev. George Sublette. Private inurnment will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. Feb. 19 in the First Christian Church. Bodley Lodge 1 AF&AM will conduct Masonic services at the church.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or Blessing Hospital Foundation.
