POLICE: BABY'S DEATH ACCIDENTAL

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Friday on a 2-month-old Joplin boy who died of apparent suffocation while sleeping with his mother on a couch Thursday night.
Emergency medical personnel were called about 10 p.m. Thursday to 1501 S. Byers Ave. after Jennifer Dimes, 24, woke up and found her baby boy, Christopher D. Vaughn, unresponsive and not breathing, according to Joplin Police Cpl. Jim Wallace.

The infant was taken to Freeman Hospital West, where he was pronounced dead. Wallace said an autopsy was expected to be conducted Friday in Springfield.

"All indications are that this was an accidental situation where the baby and mom were sleeping on the couch, and the baby suffocated," Wallace said.

The exact positioning of the mother and the child on the couch at the point of suffocation had not been determined, he said.
