S/Sgt. Cleiborn U. Booker - B-24, Left Waist Gunner, Augusta, Ga.

FORMER COUNTY GIRL'S HUSBAND IN HEROIC ROLE

Recently Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Wright, of East Market Street, Mount Union, receiver the distressing news that Staff Sgt. Cleiborn U. Booker, of Augusta, Georgia, the husband of their niece, who was formerly Francis Stair of Mount Union, was missing in action. Imagine their happiness the latter part of the week when they received word that he had turned up in a very heroic role in the raid on the city of Lille.

His picture was radioed from London and appeared in a newspaper in Augusta, Ga. This newspaper praised his heroism as follows: "Cleiburn U. Booker, 29-year old Augustan was just taken into the army last January but already he has figured in one of those experiences which make excitement enough to while away many a dull moment in the Army Air Corps.

"The Liberator bomber" in which he was engineer tangled with German fighter planes in the great raid on Lille. Staff Sergeant Booker nursed the engine along while a gunner, Aaron F. Moses of Monroe, Mich.(should be LA), plugged a hole in the fuel line until his 'fingers froze,"

An, Associated Press story front London says "After Moses' hand froze and became numb, Lieut. J. S. State, of St. Augustine, Fla. played Peter-at-the-Dike until the ship got home, in turn with Lt. Thad Hawkins, of Griffin and Staff Sergeant Edward W. Eichman, of Milwaukee. Meanwhile Sergeant Booker stayed by his engines, nursing them along until they were over the field." It is needless to say that the Mount Union relatives were overjoyed to receive this good news from across the water. The Daily News Huntington, PA 10/19/1942
