Attended Porter Military Academy and The Medical College of Charleston where he graduated second in his class of 1905. He was offered a scholarship to Dartmouth, but did not choose to accept it. He was a brillant scholar and as a doctor made a beloved and highly respected name in Blackville and the surrounding countryside where he practiced medicine and served his community in many ways for nearly sixty years.

There was another side of Dr. Hammond which must be mentioned to complete the many interesting facets of this delightfully entertaining and thoroughly individual man. He was a true sportsman, an excellent marksman and superb fisherman. He truly loved the outdoors and appreciated nature in its deepest sense.

He always had a keen interest in plants. He developed and named new species of camellias. Another hobby in which he excelled was collecting old and unusual cars. Dr. Hammond also had an extensive and impressive collection of firearms. It is easy to understand how people, even those who knew him well, contstantly discovered new talents and interest in this rather shy, reserved, and scholarly man.
