Joseph Baxter Morris was the son of Thomas J. Morris and Mary Baxter Morris, grandson of Joseph Baxter and great grandson of William Baxter. Joseph was born and grew up in Rutherford County. His death certificate sites the names of his father and mother and it states his occupation as that of "farmer". He married Ella Lavenia Flack December 19,1872. He died at the age of 73 years 7 months and 3 days. His former place of residence was the town of Rutherford College, Burke County NC. Place of death was Burke county, Lovelady township September 4, 1919. Place of burial was to Rutherford Co. Date of burial was September 6, 1919. He was a veteran of the Civil War and his name appears on the pension application for confederate veterans (index vol. 1901, M-R, pg 643) along with the names of his brothers James and George. The May 13, 1920 edition of "The Sun" newspaper mentioned Joseph among other fallen confederate veterans who had recently passed away and had "crossed over the river to rest under the shade of a tree". The names of Joseph and Ella's children were sons, Verona Hicks Morris (railway conductor), Rollie L.
