He was born November 10, 1892, in Weedsport, Cayuga, NY, the son of Charles Marble Adams and Florence (Austin) Adams. At an early age he learned to play the flute, performing on occasions at church, school and local recitals. He attended the local public schools, receiving his diploma from Weedsport High School in June 1911 . At Williams he became a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.

After graduating from college he returned to live with his parents at Weedsport. Starting in the fall of 1915, he was first employed by the Solvay Process Company at Syracuse, Onondaga, NY, where he worked for about a year and one-half as a cost accountant in the audit department. He was next employed for about six months as a surveyor in the engineering department of the City of Syracuse. With the Country entering World War I, he enlisted in the United States Army on January 4, 1917, and served in the coastal field artillery at Fort Monroe, Hampton, VA achieving the rank of master gunner. On November 28, 1918, he was honorably discharged from active service and commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Coastal Artillery Officers Reserve Corp of the U.S. Army. In July 1921, he was transferred, probably for training purposes, to the company’s branch office in Montreal, Canada, and returned in January 1922 to the home office at Hartford. After spending several months in special organizing and accounting work, in June 1922 he was made chief clerk of the group department. On January 20, 1930, the Board of Directors of the Travelers Insurance Companies elected him to the position of Assistant Secretary for the Group Department, , a position he occupied until he retired a few years before his death.
