John's obituary that was published on Oct 8, 1926 (source: Blue Earth County Historical Society in Mankato, MN): LONGSUFFERING CLOSED BY DEATH -- J. H. RUPERT ANSWERS FINAL SUMMONS -- Death came to John Henry Rupert early Wednesday morning after a long and lingering illness. He was born at Springfield, Ohio, June 29, 1852, and had therefore lived a few months over seventy-four years. More than half of these years had been spent in Mapleton. When a small boy Mr. Rupert's mother died and his father later married again but the young boy was soon compelled to look out for himself. He was only about twelve years old when he left his father's home and between that time and when he was fifteen he went to Missauri punching cattle. Finally he drifted to Minnesota, settling in Houston county. It was there that he met and married Sophrona Plonty. Their marriage took place Nov. 18, 1874, at Preston, at which place and Spring Valley they lived from eight to ten years. And then about 39 years ago they moved to Mapleton. Mr. Rupert was a stone mason by trade and he worked laying stone as long as his health would permit, a bad hernia and large goitre making it difficult for him to continue heavy labor as long as he otherwise might have done. The deceased was a very social man, enjoyed visiting with his neighbors and made many sincere friends. He was a good gardener and until this past summer prided himself upon his ability to make his garden produce the most, the finest and the earliest vegetable of any in the town. Along in his first years of residence in Mapleton, Mr. Rupert joined the Odd Fellows lodge and had continued an active membership up to his death. He took pride in doing his part in the society well and filled the offices of the order with credit to himself and his lodge. His fraternal brothers recognized his faithfulness to their precepts. Mr. Rupert was the last of his father's family but of his own household he leaves his wife and four children, one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Beagle having died in 1919. The children living are Clover and William at home, who with their mother have given months of tender care to the deceased, Ben F. Rupert and Mrs. Maude Foisy of Prosser, Washington, and Henry Rupert of Yakima, Washington. The funeral services will be held this Friday afternoon, at half past one from the home and two o'clock from the Baptist church, Rev. Earl of Minnesota Lake officiating. The interment will be made in Union cemetery.
