STERLING - Joe R. Clayton Sr., 84, died Jan. 30, 2014, at Rice County District Hospital, Lyons. He was born Sept. 20, 1929, in Gatewood, Mo., the son of John and Myrtle Cleo Brown Clayton.

A Sterling resident for 60 years, he was a road maintenance operator for Atlanta Township and most recently Victoria Township in Rice County. On Sept. 20, 1954, he married Maryann Marmul in Arkansas. Survivors include: his wife, Maryann of the home; two sons, John and Marlene Clayton of Ellinwood, and Joe R. Clayton Jr. and Larry D. Schneider of Grand Junction, Colo.; a brother, David Clayton of Naylor, Mo.; five grandchildren, Alex Clayton, Hannah Clayton, Maggie Vinduska, Joseph and Keri Vinduska, Michael Vinduska; a great-granddaughter, Emery Vinduska. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Martin and John Clayton Jr.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling, with Reverend Robert Friesen officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Burial will be held in the Raymond Hilltop Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sterling Public Library.
