Philadelphia Mayor. He served as Mayor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1962 to 1972. He was the second longest-serving mayor of Philadelphia (behind Bernard Samuel) and the city's first Catholic mayor. He succeeded Richardson Dilworth in 1962 when Dilworth resigned mid-term to commence an unsuccessful run for Pennsylvania governor. Tate was then elected to two full-terms in 1963 and 1967.
