BROOKSHIRE, Helen Painter, 87, of Newport News, passed away Friday, September 28, 2001. Born in Nelson County, Virginia on February 7, 1914, she lived much of her adult life in both Buchanan and Bluefield, Virginia. Before retiring, Helen was a successful retail entrepreneur in Bluefield. In 1987, she moved to Newport News to be closer to family members. Helen will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and wonderful personality. She enjoyed gardening and being outdoors, as well as, crocheting. She was deeply loved and will be missed by all that knew her. Helen is survived by her daughter, Mary Christensen, and her husband, Greg of Hampton; her son, Sam Brookshire of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren Barry Hamilton, Jr. of Hampton and Jessica Brookshire of Bluefield; and cousin, Dreama Gardner of Richmond and her two children, Bobby and Dee Anne. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 1, 2001 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Botetourt Funeral Home; a graveside funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Woody officiating. Arrangements by Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan, (254-3000).
