George Joseph Cushwa, Jr. was born in Roxboro, NC to George Joseph Cushwa Sr. and Bessie Pettigrew Cushwa.

On December 3, 1943, he married Rachel Gray Hunter and they settled in Roxboro. In 1959, he was named head football coach of the Thomasville High School Bulldogs, so he moved with his family to Thomasville

George and Rachel had four children: Michael Hunter Cushwa, Ann Gordon Cushwa, Georgiana Rachel Cushwa, and Susan Gray Cushwa.

George J. Cushwa, Jr. died October 10, 1983 in Thomasville, NC.
