Metallurgist, Electrical engineer. He was born in Hanover, Germany, but started his electroplating service and equipment in England since the British patent laws afforded him better protection. He became a British citizen in 1859. He had numerous inventions and his improvements of the steel furnace led to the "open-hearth" process and Siemens' Steel. His first invention was the water meter. He was a very good businessman but was also known for his scientific research, publications and involvement in various associations. He was knighted by Queen Victoria a few months before his death in November 1883. At his death, he left a large fortune but no children.
