Marlys was born on July 7, 1935 in Sisseton, SD to Albert and Martha (Rinas) Oien in Sisseton, SD. In her early years, she lived in Sioux Falls, SD and then the family returned to the Sisseton area and moved on a farm north of town. She completed grade school in Sisseton and went to work as a waitress to help support the family after her father died. She later moved to Aberdeen and continued working as a waitress. After returning to Sisseton, she met and married Darrell Anderson on March 17, 1956. After living in town for a few years, they moved to a farm near New Effington, eventually settling on the farm place northeast of town where she lived until entering Tekakwitha Living Center in January 2014. While raising 3 daughters, Marlys worked on the farm milking cows, driving tractor and generally doing whatever needed doing on the farm. She later worked at Tekakwitha Living Center in housekeeping and laundry. She enjoyed gardening and was an avid bowler for many years. She served as a 4-H leader and volunteered to chaperone band trips. She especially enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors. Marlys passed away on January 28, 2014 at the Tekakwitha Living Center. Blessed to have shared her life is her husband, Darrell of Sisseton, SD; her children, Robin (Lynn) Shelver of Enderlin, ND, Deb (Larry) Becker of Sisseton, SD, and Shelly (David) Finck of Tripp, SD, her grandchildren are Miranda (Jay) Mackedanz of Hutchinson, MN, Mark Becker of Watertown, SD, and Caleb and Cara Finck of Tripp, SD. She was especially excited to welcome great granddaughter, Aubree Martha Mackedanz to the family this past November. Marlys was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Marlin and Raymond Oien.
