Katharine "Kitty" Averett Valiant passed away on March 22, 2012 at the Elks National Home in Bedford, VA. She was 90 years old. Kitty was born May 6, 1921 in Brookneal, VA as a fifth child to Willie Wise and Sara Ligon Averett. She relocated to Lynchburg, VA as a young girl. It was during her Lynchburg years that she developed lifelong friendships with Laura Graves, Lois Craighill and Leighton Acree. As young matrons and well past that time the four met monthly without fail for bridge, lunch and girl talk. Kitty was graduated from EC Glass High School and attended Virginia Intermont College. After completing her education, she was employed as a travel agent, a job she enjoyed immensely.

Kitty relocated to Bedford in the 1950's where she raised her two daughters Margaret and Elizabeth. She was involved in a wide range of community activities which included leading a Brownie Scout troop and membership in local garden clubs. During those years she was a competitive golfer and an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, George Kirkwood "Kirk" Averett and William "Bill" Averett; one sister, Gene Averett Christopher; two very special friends, Laura G. Howell and Leighton A. Fauntleroy Tutthill; her beloved friend, Mary H. Brawley; and the father of her children and former husband, Joseph W. Valiant, II.

She is survived by her two daughters, Margaret V. Keene and husband, Tom and Elizabeth V. Thomas and her husband, Richard; two granddaughters, Sally Thomas McDowell and her husband, Landon and Katherine D. Keene; three great-granddaughters, two sisters, Ann Averett McIntosh and Frances Averett Marshall; and one very special friend, Lois C. Sale. Kitty comes from a large fun loving, fertile and folksy family and leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and cousins to cherish the old memories and create new ones.

Interment will be private with a memorial services at a later date.

The family would like to express their gratitude for all the loving care the staff at the Special Care Unit at the Elks National Home provided. The quality of her life was increased immeasurably by having these caregivers in her life.
