Last provost of the collegiate church at Greystoke, he had a dispensation in 1527 to enter holy orders at the age of 19, and enjoy a plurality of benefices, notwithstanding his defect in birth, being born of noble parents but out of wedlock. Henry VIII confirmed the union of the churches of Weme in the diocese of Lichfield, Folketon in Yorkshire, Skelton in Cumberland, and Morpeth in Northumberland, which had been granted to John Dacre by the Pope on Jun. 20, 1528. On account of old age he had a dispensation dated Dec. 1, 1565 from the Archbishop of Canterbury to hold the rectory of Morpeth with that of Greystoke.
